This collection consists of a scrapbook album entitled "Confederate Portrait Album Civil War 1861-1865," containing numerous letters, signatures, newspaper clippings, pictures, poetry, booklets, and biographies. Despite its title, this scrapbook kept by Thomas D. Osborne of Louisville, Kentucky, contains items dated 1796-1921 with the bulk dates between 1882 and 1905. Osborne was loyal to the Confederacy during the Civil War, but this scrapbook covers many years of his life and shows the diversity of his activities and causes. He had some involvement or connections with the United Confederate Veterans, Daughters of the Confederacy, Knights of Honor, and the Great American Fire Extinguisher Company. The scrapbook also indicates Osborne's interests such as collecting signatures of politicians and government officials. He also spent time in Egypt, possibly Paris, France, and many parts of the U.S. Names represented are H.L. Stone, Mrs. George Deering, Thomas H. Clay, J.W. McGarvey, Senator John Sherman, John W.A. Frye, J. Proctor Knott, John A. Lewis, George Moorman, J.P. Morgan, James J. Breckinridge, Senator John Scott, Gertrude Atherton, Gen. John B. Castleman, Julia Ward Howe, S.J. Reid, George Peabody, Coleman duPont, John Sheart Williams, and the Duke of Wellington. Also included are a program for the 14th annual convention for the Daughters of the Confederacy, booklet on the plans for the Manassas Battlefield Confederate Park, booklet on the Jefferson Davis Memorial Park (Fairview, Kentucky), and a letter dated August 1796 by the Church of Christ at Nevin, Caernarvonshire, North Wales, granting Elizabeth Hughes permission to go to America.
